For decades, Sasol’s Secunda complex has occupied a central place in South Africa’s economy. It produces fuels and chemicals that support industry, jobs, and energy security but these benefits have come with significant costs. The facility ranks as the largest point-source emitter of greenhouse gases. In addition, communities living in and around Secunda have long been exposed to some of the country’s highest levels of industrial air pollution, while emissions from the Highveld are carried far beyond the immediate area. This affects air quality and has an impact on the health of communities across Mpumalanga and into Gauteng.
This International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, join us as we launch a new report by the Health Impact Assessment Report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, which examines the human health consequences of industrial air pollution from Sasol’s Secunda operations. The report reveals that the air pollution from the facility is estimated to contribute to approximately 1,000 premature deaths every year – 25 times the number of fatalities recorded by the entire mining industry in 2025.
Participants will discuss environmental regulation, corporate accountability, and the trade-offs that continue to shape air quality governance in South Africa.
